How Much Stain for a Deck With Railings

A deck’s floor footprint excludes railings, balusters, posts and steps. Inventory the surfaces you will coat and calculate each product and coat separately. The share contributed by railings depends on the design, not a fixed percentage of floor area.
The footprint is only the beginning
Deck-board top faces = deck length × width
That’s your starting number and nothing more. A 12-by-16 deck has a 192 sq ft top — but the railings, steps, fascia and any board edges or undersides in your plan are all separate surfaces that the footprint ignores completely.
Build a surface inventory
Add up what you’ll actually stain, by type:
- Deck-board tops: length × width (the footprint)
- Stair treads and risers: count × measured width × tread depth (and riser height, if coated)
- Rails and posts: sum the measured faces you’ll coat
- Balusters: count × the coated perimeter of one × its length
- Fascia, exposed edges and undersides: include only where the specification and project call for them
The balusters are the trap. A deck with 60 balusters, each with roughly 0.8 sq ft of coatable surface, adds about 48 sq ft — a quarter again on top of a small deck’s floor — and every one of them is a fiddly, slow-to-coat stick. That’s why “just add 10% for railings” fails: two decks with the identical footprint can have a simple cable rail on one and a forest of turned wood balusters on the other.
The coverage trap: first coat vs second coat
Some wood coatings specify different spread rates for successive coats. Use those rates only for the product and surface they describe, and confirm that the product is approved for the deck surface in question. A vertical fence product is not automatically suitable for a walked-on deck. The following manufacturer page illustrates product-specific coat rates, not a deck-product recommendation:
So calculate each coat on its own:
Volume per coat = measured coated area ÷ that coat’s coverage rate
A worked example
Say the inventory totals 192 sq ft of deck boards + 48 sq ft of balusters + 40 sq ft of rails, posts and steps = 280 sq ft of coated surface. If your semi-transparent stain lists about 200 sq ft/gal on the thirsty first coat and 300 on the second:
- First coat: 280 ÷ 200 = 1.4 gallons
- Second coat: 280 ÷ 300 = 0.9 gallon
- Total: about 2.3 gallons
Now see the cost of the two classic shortcuts. Measure only the 192 sq ft footprint and you’d under-buy by roughly a third. Estimate the whole job at the smooth second-coat rate and you’d come up short on the first pass. Both errors point the same direction: not enough stain, discovered halfway across the deck.
Deck-surface omissions
- Measuring only the footprint. Railings, balusters and steps can rival the floor area.
- “Add 10% for railings.” Inventory them — the real number depends entirely on the railing design.
- Using one coverage rate for both coats. Use separate rates when the selected product specifies them.
- Assuming all stains behave alike. Transparent, semi-transparent and solid differ in prep, spread and coats.
Exterior wood moves the coverage rate
Coverage on exterior wood is genuinely variable with species, weathering, roughness and application, which is why manufacturers publish ranges and separate coat rates. Treat the arithmetic as a plan, and confirm wood condition, moisture, cleaning, compatibility and application temperature in the product instructions before you buy — a gray, weathered deck may need cleaning or brightening first.
