How Much Paint for a Stairwell

A stairwell is the wall that makes people put the roller down and stare. It’s tall, it’s often two stories, and one side climbs at an angle that clearly isn’t a rectangle. But a stairwell wall is friendlier than it looks: it’s a rectangle with a triangle on top, exactly like a gable, and once you measure it in shapes the paint math is ordinary. The genuinely hard part of a stairwell isn’t the arithmetic — it’s reaching the top safely — so we’ll size the paint and then be honest about the ladder.

Measure it in shapes

The wall alongside a staircase is usually a rectangle plus a triangle: a full-height rectangle at the bottom, and a triangle above the stair line where the floor steps up. Measure each:

Rectangle area = width × the shorter (lower) wall height

Triangle area = width × the extra rise ÷ 2

Add them for that wall’s gross area. The opposite wall of a stairwell is often a plain tall rectangle (width × full height), and the two-story open wall above the stairs can be another rectangle. Measure each surface as its own shape and sum them — don’t try to eyeball one number for the whole shaft.

A worked example: a stairwell wall is 10 feet wide, 8 feet tall at the low end, and rises another 8 feet across to the high end.

  • Rectangle: 10 × 8 = 80 sq ft
  • Triangle: 10 × 8 ÷ 2 = 40 sq ft
  • That wall: 120 sq ft

Add a matching tall wall opposite and a bit of upper landing wall and you might total 300–400 sq ft of stairwell — real, but not enormous.

Turning it into paint

Using an illustrative 350 sq ft per gallon and a tested two-coat plan, 350 sq ft of stairwell is 350 × 2 ÷ 350 = 2 gallons before package rounding. That is one scenario, not a typical stairwell allowance. Replace all three inputs with your measured area, selected product’s coverage and actual coat plan.

The part that isn’t about paint

Here’s the limit a coverage number can’t address: the reach is a separate safety problem. Do not level a ladder with loose objects, bridge a plank between improvised supports or use equipment in a configuration its manufacturer has not approved. OSHA’s workplace rule requires ladders to be used on stable, level surfaces unless they are secured against displacement, and never beyond their rated capacity. Residential conditions and equipment differ, so follow the exact ladder or platform manufacturer’s instructions. If you cannot establish an approved, stable setup for the stair geometry, leave the high work to a qualified, insured professional.

Stairwell geometry errors

  • Treating the angled wall as a rectangle. Split it into a rectangle plus a triangle.
  • Buying from a “typical stairwell” allowance. Measure the surfaces; stairwell shapes and heights vary.
  • Improvising access over the stairs. Use only an approved configuration from the equipment manufacturer, or hire the work out.
  • Forgetting the upper landing walls. Measure every surface in the shaft, each as its own shape.

Solve access safety separately

These are planning estimates for quantity; they don’t make a tall stairwell safe to reach. Coverage also depends on the product, surface and color. Read the paint’s own coverage, let a test patch settle hiding on a big color, and treat the access as the part of the job that deserves the most care.
