How Much Paint or Stain for Both Sides of a Fence

Fences are where paint math quietly falls apart, because a fence is not a wall — it is a collection of faces, edges and gaps pretending to be one flat plane. Estimate it like a wall and you will be short, sometimes badly, especially on new wood. The fix is not a bigger fudge factor; it is measuring the surfaces you will actually coat and using the coverage rate for the wood you actually have. Two ideas do almost all the work: count both sides, and respect thirsty wood.

The one honest starting point: solid panels

If the fence is a solid, flat panel and you are coating both faces, the area is genuinely simple:

Flat-face area = fence length × fence height × 2

A 100-foot run of 6-foot solid fence, both sides, is 100 × 6 × 2 = 1,200 sq ft of face. That is your baseline — but notice what it leaves out: exposed board edges, the tops of pickets, the gaps between boards, rails, posts, caps and gates. On a truly flat panel those are minor. On a picket or board-on-board fence they are not, which is the next problem.

Why a picket fence breaks the formula

A picket fence has two broad faces plus the two long edges of every picket, the gaps, and the rails behind them. People try to patch this by adding “10% for a picket fence,” but the real difference depends on picket width, spacing and thickness — it is not a fixed percentage you can look up.

Two reliable ways to handle it:

  • Build a surface inventory. Add up what you will coat, by type:
    • Solid panel faces: length × height × coated sides
    • Pickets: count × coated perimeter of one picket × its length
    • Rails and posts: sum the measured coated faces
    • Gates: measure separately, and don’t double-count the opening they swing in
    • Caps, edges and end grain: include only where the product and plan call for coating
  • Measure a sample section. Coat one representative 8- or 10-foot section, see how much it actually took, and multiply by the number of matching sections. For complicated geometry this beats any formula, because the fence itself is doing the measuring.

Use the coverage for the surface and coating

Surface roughness, condition and coating can change the spread rate. Do not assume that new wood always needs twice the paint. Use the product’s stated range and application system, and label any selected first- and second-coat rates as inputs for your actual project.

That is why the first coat and the second coat are different calculations. BEHR, for example, publishes different first- and second-coat coverage ranges for its solid-color house and fence stain — the first coat soaks in, the second goes further:

So calculate each coat on its own:

Volume per coat = measured coated area ÷ that coat’s coverage rate

A worked example

Say your 100-foot, 6-foot solid fence gives 1,200 sq ft of face for both sides, the wood is new and rough, and your solid stain lists roughly 150 sq ft/gal for the first coat and 300 for the second:

  • First coat: 1,200 ÷ 150 = 8 gallons
  • Second coat: 1,200 ÷ 300 = 4 gallons
  • Total: about 12 gallons

If both coats were incorrectly estimated at 300 sq ft/gal, the order would be eight gallons. In this example those eight gallons cover the entire first coat, leaving four gallons missing for the second coat. That is a one-third shortage relative to the full 12-gallon requirement, not a shortage two-thirds of the way through the first pass.

Fence-area errors that double the miss

  • Painting one side in your head. “Both sides” doubles the area — it is right there in the formula, and it is the easiest line to forget.
  • Using one coverage number for new wood. Use separate rates when the selected product specifies them; do not assume one rate or a universal ratio.
  • Patching pickets with a percentage. Inventory the faces or measure a sample section instead.
  • Forgetting posts, caps and gates. They are real surface area; a long fence has a lot of post.

Exterior wood makes coverage variable

Coverage on exterior wood is genuinely variable — species, roughness, age, weathering, application method and coating all move it, which is exactly why manufacturers publish ranges rather than one number. Treat the arithmetic as a plan and let a measured sample section or the product’s technical data have the final word, and check weather, moisture and prep requirements before you open a can.
