How Much Paint for a 2-Car Garage Interior? Walls, Ceiling, and Bare Block
Ask this question on any home forum and the top reply is “two or three gallons, you’ll be fine.” That answer is wrong, and it’s wrong in a specific, expensive way: it counts the walls, forgets the ceiling, and pretends the bare drywall or block behind your shelving drinks paint at the same rate as a finished bedroom. A two-car garage is the single biggest painting underestimate I see, so let me size a real one — 24 by 24 feet, 9-foot walls — and show you where the gallons actually go.
Walk the four walls
Perimeter first, because that’s the surface your roller touches. A 24-by-24 garage has four 24-foot walls, so 96 linear feet around the room. Multiply by a 9-foot ceiling and you get 864 square feet of gross wall — already nearly three times the wall area of the 12x12 bedroom most people picture when they guess “two gallons.”
Now subtract the holes, and a garage has a big one. The overhead door is the surface you don’t paint: a standard two-car door is 16 feet wide by 7 feet tall, which is 112 square feet gone in a single opening. Add a service door at the standard 21 square feet and one window at 15, and your openings total 148 square feet.
So net paintable wall is 864 minus 148, which leaves 716 square feet of actual wall per coat. That overhead door alone is the size of two bedroom walls; skip the subtraction and you’ll buy a coat of paint for a surface that rolls up to the ceiling.
The ceiling nobody adds

Put the two surfaces together and one coat of the whole garage interior covers 716 plus 576, or 1,292 square feet. That’s the number every gallon estimate has to start from. The forum answer wasn’t even close because it was solving a different, smaller problem.
Coverage is not one number
Garages rarely have finished, previously painted walls. You’re usually looking at bare drywall, raw concrete block (CMU), or a mix, and those surfaces don’t behave like a sealed bedroom wall. Here’s what a gallon actually covers across the surfaces you’ll meet in a garage:

Case 1: bare drywall garage, primer plus two coats
This is the common build — drywalled, taped, never painted. You prime once to seal the raw paper, then two finish coats.
The prime coat covers the full 1,292 square feet at primer’s rate of about 300 square feet per gallon: 1,292 ÷ 300 = 4.3 gallons. Round up to 5 gallons of primer (a 5-gallon bucket is the obvious buy here, and it’ll have a little left for spot work).
Two finish coats over sealed walls and ceiling is 1,292 × 2 = 2,584 square feet. At 350 per gallon, that’s 2,584 ÷ 350 = 7.4 gallons. Round to 8 gallons of finish paint.

Thirteen gallons. Not two or three. Even if you skip primer and roll three finish coats instead, you’re at 1,292 × 3 = 3,876 ÷ 350 = 11.1 gallons — still eleven cans. There’s no honest version of this job that fits in three gallons.
Case 2: bare concrete block (CMU) — the block filler tax
If your garage walls are raw cinder block, the math gets heavier, because masonry has two strikes against it: it’s porous, and the mortar joints and surface pores add square footage your tape measure never sees.
You don’t prime block — you fill it. Block filler is a thick, paste-like product that packs the pores so finish paint has a smooth surface to grip. It covers far less ground than primer, often 75 to 150 square feet per gallon depending on how rough the block is. Take only the 716 square feet of block wall (the drywall or finished ceiling above gets normal primer) and plan filler at the cautious end, 100 square feet per gallon: 716 ÷ 100 = 7.2, so 8 gallons of block filler for the walls alone.
Once the filler seals it, the block behaves like a normal sealed wall, so two finish coats on the 716-square-foot walls is 1,432 ÷ 350 = 4.1 gallons. The 576-square-foot ceiling still needs its own primer (1.9 gallons, call it 2) and two finish coats (1,152 ÷ 350 = 3.3, call it 4). Block filler is the line item the forum answer never mentions, and on a full-block garage it’s the most expensive bucket on the receipt. The 350 rate only holds once the filler has gone on — if you ever roll finish straight onto un-filled or barely-filled block, drop back to 200–250 square feet per gallon, because the pores will still be drinking.
Whether you even need primer is its own call
Notice I split primer and finish into separate buckets with separate rates — 300 versus 350 — and separate coat counts. Lumping them as “coats of stuff at 350” is how people under-buy the sealing coat, which is exactly the coat that runs short on raw paper and block. Round up, then run your own dimensions
Plenty of garages aren’t a clean 24-by-24. A 20-by-22 with 8-foot walls, a third window, a side man-door — every change moves the total, and the surface mix moves it more. Rather than re-do the arithmetic by hand, size your garage in the paint calculator: punch in the perimeter, ceiling height, and openings, and it’ll deduct that 112-square-foot overhead door for you and hand back the wall area to divide.
One honest caveat: these are quantity figures, not safety or prep advice. Whether old block needs patching, whether a damp garage wall has a moisture problem that paint will only trap, and how to ventilate while you work are calls a square-footage number can’t make.
