How Much Paint for a 2-Car Garage Interior

Estimate a garage from its interior dimensions, openings and surfaces, rather than its car capacity. Keep walls, ceiling and any separate primer or filler system as individual quantities so each can use the correct coverage rate.
First, it is bigger than it feels
The size table below uses illustrative footprints and heights, not a surveyed range of two-car garages. Start with measured gross wall area:
Gross wall area = 2 × (interior length + interior width) × wall height
For a 24-by-24 garage with 9-foot walls: 2 × (24 + 24) × 9 = 864 sq ft before openings. The ceiling is a separate 576-sq-ft surface in this example.
Now subtract what you will not paint. In this worked example, the measured openings are a 16-by-7-foot overhead door, a 3-by-7-foot service door and a 3-by-5-foot window. A real garage may have one wide overhead door, two narrower doors or different openings, so replace every example dimension with your measurements:
- Gross wall: 864
- Less measured 16 × 7 overhead door: −112
- Less measured 3 × 7 service door: −21
- Less measured 3 × 5 window: −15
- Net wall area: 716 sq ft
Assume two finish coats and 350 sq ft per gallon for both surfaces solely for this example:

Different wall and ceiling products require 5 + 4 = 9 whole gallons under these assumptions. If gallons and quarts are available, the separate orders can instead be 4 gal + 1 qt for walls and 3 gal + 2 qt for the ceiling, or 7.75 gallons total. Only if the product and color are identical can the liquid volumes be pooled: 7.383 gallons rounds to 8 whole gallons, or 7 gallons plus 2 quarts. Primer or block filler is additional; no separate waste allowance is included here.
Then, the substrate can change everything
The surface and existing coating determine which product system is appropriate. A drywall finish-paint rate cannot be assumed to describe a concrete-block filler. Check the selected product’s technical sheet and keep any filler or primer separate from finish paint.
If the selected system calls for a block filler, use that filler’s own spread rate. With an illustrative rate of 100 sq ft per gallon, one coat over 716 sq ft needs 716 ÷ 100 = 7.16 gallons, requiring eight whole gallons if that is the sale unit. This is an arithmetic example, not a recommendation to apply filler to every block wall. The linked technical sheet describes one specific product:
The rule to take away: do not divide every surface by one rate. Bare block, painted drywall and new drywall each get their own line, their own product, and their own coverage number.

Subtract your measured doors and windows from whichever cell matches your garage — these are gross numbers, not your final paintable area.
The mistakes that leave a wall unpainted
- Using the finish rate for filler. Calculate each specified coating with its own spread rate and coat count.
- Omitting the ceiling. In this example it adds 576 sq ft before multiplying by coats.
- Not subtracting the overhead door. The example 16-by-7-foot door is 112 square feet excluded from the wall coating — leaving it in over-buys, but so does forgetting there might be two of them.
- Blending walls and ceiling into one product. They are often different paints with different coverage; keep them on separate lines.
What the garage estimate cannot predict
These are planning estimates. Real coverage depends on the exact product, how rough the block or drywall is, temperature, and application. Coating a garage can also mean prep — degreasing, patching, sealing — that a quantity calculator does not decide for you, and if the building predates 1978, disturbing old paint means following lead-safe practices. Read the technical data sheet for the specific filler and topcoat you choose.
